The future is electrical
Volkswagen brand boss Thomas Schäfer has clearly positioned himself: The future of mobility in Europe is electrical. In a LinkedIn contribution, he outlines the challenges of the automotive industry and calls for political support to promote the ride of electromobility. At the same time, Schäfer emphasizes the ambitions of Volkswagen to dominate the market with a wide portfolio of electric cars.
The challenge: demand instead of supply
Influence of demand through environmental bonus abolition
The European car market faces major challenges. In Germany in particular, the abolition of the environmental bonus has led to a noticeable slump in demand. However, Schäfer sees no problem on the offer page:
-
Wide electrical portfolio from Volkswagen:
- ID.3 from less than 30,000 euros
- Id.7 with over 700 km range
- Planned models below 25,000 euros and even under 20,000 euros
"The supply is there - but demand has to be increased," emphasizes Schäfer.
What politics has to do
Tax incentives and cheap charges
In order to make electromobility more attractive for customers, Schäfer demands targeted policy measures:
- Tax incentives For commercial and private customers
- Cheap prices in public shops
- Leading shop network in Europe
- Promotion of a Competitive ecosystem For raw materials, battery and recycling
Flexibility in CO₂ regulations
Schäfer also criticizes the existing CO₂ regulations and demands more flexibility to enable manufacturers to make realistic objectives.
Volkswagen as the driver of the transformation
Volkswagen has set itself the goal of financing and promoting the technological transformation on its own. However, Schäfer also sees the need for a "joint effort" to keep up in global competition. In particular with a view to China and the USA, Europe has to act quickly.
Conclusion: joint effort for electromobility
Electromobility is not only a question of technology, but also the political framework. Volkswagen shows that the will for transformation is there, but demands the support of politics to keep the European market competitive in the long term.
"Now the time is to be acted," says Schäfer. And one thing is certain: the future of mobility is electrical.
