VW electric car overview 2025-Current & upcoming models

Short conclusion in advance

Volkswagen drives a double strategy in 2025: established ID models (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, ID.BUZZ) remain the core of the electrical range, in parallel VW Stark invests in significantly cheaper, strong high-volume urbane-EVS (ID.2 / ID.Polo / ID.EVY1 / ID.2AL) for Europe from 2026–2027 the market should come.

Current model range (relevant for buyers 2025)

  • Id.3 - compact, especially for city and commuting; Different battery versions and still a core model in Europe. Good choice if you are looking for an agile city/compact EV.

  • Id.4 -mid-range crossover/SUV; Balanced space/price ratio, suitable for families and long distance with good charging infrastructure integration. (VW provides information about model maintenance and My25 information on the brand pages.)

  • Id.5 -Coupé-like variant of ID.4, sportier in design, similar technology foundation.

  • ID.7 -mid-range sedan / shooting brake variants; Technically mature with a high range in the top versions-interesting for long-distance drivers, but is positioned in market-specific.

  • Id.buzz -electric bus/van in retro design; As a family/leisure solution with lots of space and variable layouts relevant for buyers with space requirements.

Upcoming & announced models (2025–2027)

  • Id.2all / Id.Polo (formerly ID.2 / ID.1 family) -VW brings a new "Electric Urban Car Family" for Europe: affordable, front-driven MEB branch (ID.2all from ~ 2026; a polo variant called Id.polo was announced for 2026). The goal: significantly lower entry prices (~ € 25,000 and underneath in variants) in order to exist against price aggressive competitors (especially from China).

  • ID.EVYY1 / ID.ONE (Entry Level Concepts) - VW shows concepts and announces a future series of very cheap EVs (goal: from ~ € 20,000 in later years; production/market launch for parts of the family between 2026–2027 announced). This is part of the strategy to make electromobility more suitable for mass.

  • Id.Cross / Concept models -VW uses trade fairs like IAA 2025 to present new concepts for affordable compact SUVs; This will probably result in concrete volume models in the next few years.

What changes for buyers & which models are worthwhile for whom?

  • Family / frequent user: Id.4 or Id.5-Practical, plenty of space, good reach-/loading balance. Id.buzz if you want maximum space.

  • Commuter / city: Id.3 remains a compact, efficient option. From 2026/27, the new Urban family (Id.Polo / Id.2all) will be exciting for budget-conscious commuters.

  • Long distance / comfort: ID.7 is technically designed at long distances (high WLTP range in top versions)-is worth it if you drive many motorway kilometers.

Technology & Platform strategy-briefly explained

VW uses the MEB architecture for many ID models, but brings new offshoots (front Wheel-Drive variants) for cheap volume models. At the same time, software and cost optimizations are promoted so that entry-level EVs become economically competitive. This strategy is a direct answer to growing competition (including from China) and lower margin goals for entry -level models.

Market view & practical information

  1. If you buy at short notice (2025): Id.3 / Id.4 are mature, immediately available options; Id.buzz/id.7 Check as required.

  2. If budget is decisive (waiting possible): From 2026/27 there are affordable urban-EVS (ID.2all / Id.Polo / Id.Eevery1)-are worthwhile if you are looking for a cheap, everyday-oriented EV.

  3. Accessories & compatibility: Many ID models share platform parts, nevertheless the exact model and construction annual examination is worthwhile for rims, mats, frunks or sound systems (e.g. Id.3 vs. Id.4- different body sizes). (We would be happy to help you with specific compatibility checks.)
